As LGBTQ+ rights come under fire nationwide, Fort Lauderdale's Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library (SNMAL), one of the eldest and most significant LGBTQ+ institutions in the world, is embracing the community's fighting spirit with the announcement of its 2nd Annual Stonewall Uprising Reenactment set for June 28th.
"The 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York transformed LGBTQ+ history permanently. The young people who took to the streets, started organizations, fed and clothed the young, who because of their orientation, lost their families and homes, created the modern equal rights movement," stated SNMAL President and CEO Robert Kesten. "We stand on their shoulders and continue the struggle they started in a seedy bar in Greenwich Village."
Last year's reenactment, the very first of its kind, welcomed Peabody and GLAAD-award winner Kristen Lovell of HBO docu-film 'The Stroll' as gay liberation activist Marsha P Johnson, as well as saw South Florida police departments making several 'arrests' after 'breaking into' the Stonewall INN Stonewall Exhibit (currently in Key West for 2025), all while 1969 musical classics like Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in brought attendees back in time to the famous night.
Kesten added, "This year's reenactment is a reminder that the fight for equality, justice and human rights is ongoing. There are always people who would gladly limit the rights of others to build themselves up. Casting blame and scapegoating others for social and government failures is nothing new, but we have seen this before and although we hoped it was over, we are not surprised by the callous nature of our opponents. Their use of religion and blind loyalty to zealots reminds us all of those who simply take orders but do not think for themselves."
"Knowledge is power. In our archives and library exists records, stories, documents and treasure that tell a community's story. It reminds us that this Pride needs to be about what our community stands to lose from inaction, and we need to come together to protect our history and futures from being erased."
