'Miss Guided?' Hunky 'Traitors' Star Dylan Efron on his Drag Name
READ TIME: 5 MIN.
There are two hunks making waves on the current season of "The Traitors," Peacock's runaway hit reality series: Sam Asghari, the Iranian-born fitness star famous for his marriage with Britney Spears; and Dylan Efron, Zac's younger brother and popular travel influencer. While both have lived in the shadow of well-known celebrities, each has made their personalities shine on the insanely entertaining fourth American edition of this international franchise.
Everything is slicker and more intense this time around, from host Alan Cumming's outré fashions to the horror movie-influenced production design, and, most importantly, the tense rivalry between the "traitors" and the "faithfuls" at the heart of the competition. Spoiler alert: much of that has centered on the "faithfuls" identifying "RuPaul Drag Race" winner Bob the Drag Queen as a traitor, and, even more dramatically, the hunt to expose "Survivor" star Boston Rob as one as well.
Of course, anyone that has followed the Efron brothers on social media see their striking resemblance; but the differences are also plain to see. But Zac looks every inch the scrubbed and polished movie star, while Dylan has a younger, boyish and more natural appearance. They both share a love of fitness and the outdoors, which led to Dylan to produce and co-star in the reality series "Down to Earth With Zac Efron" on Netflix. On the show's two seasons the bearded Zac visited exotic locations throughout the world along with alternative health expert Darin Olien, whose theories on the environment and nutrition spurred controversy.
That aside, in a profile in Cosmopolitan, Dylan opened up about the show. "I love my brother. I'm so proud of him, and if anything, it's helped me with my career, so I have no issue with people calling me Zac's little brother."
Unlike Zac, Dylan didn't head to Hollywood until after he graduated from CalTech with a degree in economics and working a 9-5 job. But his thirst for travel and adventure led him to seek to the entertainment industry as a producer and content provider, first on YouTube. He tells Cosmopolitan that his proudest achievement to date is his five-part series on his trip to Guyana.
He had to cancel a trip to Africa to appear on "The Traitors," but considers his stay at Cumming's Scottish retreat – an ominous castle somewhere in that country's rough environs – another adventure, not unlike swimming with sharks. (In this case, Bob the Drag Queen and Boston Rob.)
Arriving there, he planned on playing a low-key game, similar to the one Asghari has done so well; but he soon realized how easily he was swayed by personal involvements with other players, and how that led him to be far more vocal at the weekly round tables in which the contestants argue about who is a "traitor" by choosing someone with hopes they are right. Dylan went after Bob the Drag Queen, but knew that by doing so he was going to put a target on his back when the "traitors" chose their next victim. "And that was the most brutal part. I knew before I even opened my mouth that this was going to get bad quickly."
When he went after Bob the Drag Queen at the roundtable, the sharp-tongued drag superstar hit back with and a meme was born. "You're a mess...," he shouted at a very collected Dylan. "And I don't even think you are a traitor. But you are misguided. That should be your drag name."
In on the joke, Dylan poses in the Cosmopolitan pics with a t-shirt that reads "Miss Guided" with a comic frown on his face.
"Yeah, I mean, I wasn't expecting to get a nickname from it... Trust me, I wasn't expecting that. I don't think anyone in America was."
And while he admits to being a good player, he thinks some of his prowess has been exaggerated. "It is so much more obvious when you're watching because people pick up on micro expressions. I'm not staring all the time at breakfast–I'm looking at my plate. I'm focusing on myself. I'm trying not to make anyone feel awkward. So I'm not picking up all those subtle cues in everyone else's game. It's very hard when you're there."
He calls being dropped in a castle with 23-reality celebrities akin to "a giant sleepover with really strange, cool people." But admits to being starstruck by Boston Rob, the "Survivor" winner whose influence over the other players galvanized the game. While others were voting to eliminate Boston Rob as a traitor (which he was), Dylan steadfastly stayed by him. "I wanted to keep Boston Rob in the game because I felt like it was in my best interest."
One of the show's campier highlights came in an arranged marriage Dylan had with Tom Sandoval, the controversial "Vanderpump Rules" personality. During a particularly grueling challenge, the two held hands while thousands of bugs were showered onto them. Throughout a cool Dylan kept the hyper insect-phobic Tom from breaking their grip, thus winning the challenge.
"It was honestly so funny. I wasn't expecting Tom to have that reaction against the bugs, but I also had faith he was going to push himself to get through this with me. That's all you ever want in a teammate–knowing that he would try his best out there–so seeing him push through his fear made me want to support him as well and get through it together. He was gripping my hand so tight."
And many fans are citing that one of the season's highlights is the footage of Dylan working out, though when this is pointed out, he responded in a typical, self-effacing way.
"Did you see Sam in the shower? I don't know if I'm the heartthrob."
