Talking 'Wellness Check' with Buff, Queer Comic John Hill
Steve Duffy READ TIME: 9 MIN.
EDGE: How does performing live differ from other forms of entertainment you've done?
John Hill: It's my favorite form. Live performances feel incredibly human. There are so many podcasts and TV shows now, but they take away from that human connection. A live performance, whether a Broadway show or a live comedy show, is a very rare and human experience that I want to keep alive. Live radio, for me, is so fun and easy, and it's second nature to me now. At first, it was really scary. A lot of people are scared of it because they're afraid they might say the wrong thing or they might strip over their words or whatever, but I love it.
EDGE: Who is the one person that you would want to come to do a wellness check on you?
John Hill: Such a good question. Michelle Obama, definitely, or Orlando Bloom. If it can't be Michelle, it must be a hot guy.
EDGE: What can audiences expect from your performance, and why should they come to see it?
John Hill: They should expect to have a great time and to laugh really hard. I try to keep it simple. That's really where I try to leave it. I try to give people a short and enjoyable show. It will be a nice, quick, and hilarious night. There's some biographical stuff in there that people relate to. I try to find humor in some of my struggles, and people love that, too. So, it's a night of laughing really hard and having a great time.
EDGE: What is the most interesting thing about you that we won't be able to find on the Internet?
John Hill: I love to eat standing up. My dad always ate that way. Even when I am home alone, I can sit at the dining table or lie in bed and eat, but no matter what, I always want to stand at the kitchen counter and eat my meals there. Also, I do my best thinking at four o'clock in the morning. Like clockwork, I wake up and write material at four in the morning. I can't write any other time of day. All the ideas come to me at that time.
EDGE: Tell us about your show on SiriusXM.
John Hill: I love my show. It is entertaining. I have comedians who make me laugh, and we spend an hour live on the radio. We take calls, and the guests and I improvise a fun hour of conversation. It's very simple, and it's much fun. We incorporate breaking news headlines into it. I don't do celebrity interviews. I love just conversing with someone about what's happening at the moment. I am on every Tuesday at 7:00 AM Pacific / 11:00 AM EST.
EDGE: Are there any upcoming projects you're particularly excited about?
John Hill: I am doing a little fall tour. I'll be performing next in LA and Seattle. That's really where all my focus is right now. After that, I'm also launching a solo radio show. I want to put something out there that people can get on Spotify and, for free, other places. I'm going to do something separate from what I do at SiriusXM. It will be me and a guest doing a wellness check. I'll be talking with people about what's right and wrong with them and just joking around and having fun.
