One Million Moms Calls for Hallmark Boycott Over LGBTQ+ Holiday Storylines

Kevin Schattenkirk READ TIME: 1 MIN.

Last week, George Zaralidas, Crown Media Vice President of Network Program Publicity, announced that the Hallmark network would be including LGBTQ+ characters and storylines into their programming. And just in time for the upcoming holiday season.

One Million Moms didn't hesitate to respond. The anti-LGBTQ+ hate group is calling on followers to abandon the network with "HallMark is Loud and Proud About Its Lead Gay Characters: Sign Boycott Petition!" One Million Moms was also responsible for Hallmark's decision to pull an ad late last year featuring a lesbian couple. After the ensuing backlash, the network decided to reinstate the ad, with an apology, a commitment to work with GLAAD on better LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion – all of which further incensed One Million Moms.

While Hallmark's recent announcement is certainly a step in the right direction for inclusion and expanded representation, and could be cause for celebration, NBC reports that "GLAAD declined to comment on Hallmark's forthcoming holiday programming until the full list of movies is announced." Entertainment Weekly notes that "several movies already wrapped production earlier this year, and pre-production is ramping up on many other films that are slated to shoot in the second half of 2020," depending on the conditions of the pandemic, of course. And with no LGBTQ+ storyline in the 18 movies (of 40 total for 2020) announced so far, it will be interesting to see if Hallmark delivers on their promise of more inclusive network programming.
