Kalifornia

Shout Factory's release of Dominic Sena's "Kalifornia" is fine for true blue fans of the film, but for those that might already own a copy, it might not be worth it. Sure you get both the Theatrical Cut and Unrated Cut, but the only extras include the original vintage featurette and a new interview with Director Sena. The Cast Interviews and Trailers and TV spots are from older editions, so the only thing new is the Sena interview and the inclusion of the original Theatrical Cut.

That said, "Kalifornia" is a sort of underground classic. With a truly slimy performance by Brad Pitt and a trademark quirky performance by Juliette Lewis, this serial-killer story is an artsy thriller with a slick look and some quotable lines. When Early (Pitt) is telling Adele (Lewis) about what California is like, he says: "One thing, people think faster out there on the account of all that warm weather. Cold weather makes people stupid. That's a fact." The film revolves around a hipster couple played by David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes who are traveling to California to kick-start their careers. Being broke, they pick up Early and Adele so they can share expenses. Unfortunately, they should have vetted their traveling companions a bit better.

"Kalifornia" is one of those early '90s weirdo suspensers that people sort of discovered accidentally even back in then. So with Shout Factory's new release, it's nice that it gets another life, and it's certainly worth checking out. It might not be a total classic - and the Blu-ray release could have been a bit more "special" - but taking a trip to this [K]alifornia is worth the time, regardless.
