Ice Age - Collision Course

Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Like all great science fiction, "Ice Age: Collision Course" poses a compelling question. What if the origin of our solar system is simpler than we think? What if all the planets aligned because a saber-toothed squirrel and an acorn were accidentally shot into space? (Now there are some complications with this theory, like how life began on earth and evolved for over a billion years without revolving around the sun, but that's a question for experts to contemplate. Surely they'll work out the complexities of this theory at a later date as our understanding of natural anthropology develops.)

In addition to forming the solar system, Scrat the squirrel and nut that he chases cause a meteor shower to plummet to the earth and threaten the lives of our heroes -- a family of wooly mammoths, two saber-tooth tigers, a few sloths and various rodents, all voiced by a bevy of talented actors and comedians, like Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Simon Pegg, Jennifer Lopez, Queen Latifah, Adam DeVine, Nick Offerman, Wanda Sykes, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and the celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The latest installment of the "Ice Age" franchise is rich in both verbal and physical humor, but the sentiment is surprisingly simple: Life is an absurd journey forward, chasing an elusive goal and staving off extinction. In the meantime, our cast of characters has some interpersonal complications. Manny the mammoth suffers the idea of losing his daughter, Peaches, to a husband, Julian, Sid the sloth looks for true love and Buck the weasel tries to save his friends from annihilation while fleeing hungry dinosaurs.

The astounding animation and artwork in this Blu-ray collection is an experience to revel. And with the glorious images on the Blu-ray 3D and 4K Ultra HD discs, why would you settle for streaming? Still, you will get the Digital HD copy included and, for a limited time, you can also stream the original "Ice Age" movie for free.

There's also nearly an hour's worth of hilarious special features on the Blu-ray. The condensed, mini-movie of Scrat's journey to space, an in-depth summary of the whole "Ice Age" series so far, a mockumentary with the movie's creators called "Mysteries of the Scratazons," a sing-along and a breakdown of the specious science in this super silly segment of the saga.
