As John Thackery's addictions continue to spiral out of control, his absence in the ward has created a mad competition to elect a successor, but The Knick is facing various other challenges, as the decisively political board of trustees decides to vacate the current building downtown for a new building uptown. The fast changing times leaves many of the staff at The Knick feeling uncertain about their futures, and many strike deadly alliances to stay one step ahead - at The Knick if you don't watch your back you may end up on the wrong end of the scalpel.

The Second Season is packed with interesting behind-the-scenes looks at the inspiration for many of the very authentic looking surgical equipment of the time that inspired the innovations of the 21st century.
