Bob the Drag Queen Wins 'RuPaul's Drag Race' Season 8
Scott Holland READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Although I saw a lot of people on Facebook posting #KimChi and #NamoiSmalls, I don't think it was a surprise to anyone that the new winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" was the contestant who, by far, did the best throughout the season: Bob the Drag Queen.
I think everyone can agree that Season 7 was not up to par, so thank god Ru came back with a group of "Gurls" that really worked it this time around and gave us a season to be excited about and talk about. In my opinion, some of the Gurls that were not in the top 3 could have won other seasons (Ex: Thorgy Thor), which only speaks to the talent of the contestants of Season 8. Having said that, it was a pleasure to sit down with Bob for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
How surprised were you to win or did you expect it?
When I went into this thing my goal was to win. So it's not odd, but it is a huge honor.
Did you spend any of the money yet, and if so on what?
The very next thing I bought was sour patch kids. I bought cherry and watermelon, and they were great. I want to say.... money well spent!
At what age did drag become an interest & how did you pick your name?
I didn't start drag until I was 22. Bob was my second name, because if your drag name should be anything, it should be easy to remember and easy to Google!
How many times did you apply to be on "RPDR," and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen?
I auditioned four times, and I was very excited when I got that call. That call changed my life.
Is there any additional pressure now that "RuPaul" has been on for so many seasons?
I think so. There are a lot of queens who have shown what it means to be a current drag superstar, and I have to make my own stance and make sure my time as queen is unique and productive.
Tell me about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience?
It was fun, it was exciting, there's nothing I can compare it to.
Which of the other contestants have you become friends with?
I'm close friends with Kim Chi, as well as Acid Betty, and I'm pretty close with Naomi Smalls.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
Well, I used to know how to solve a Rubik's Cube in under five, but I can't do that anymore. Oh, I know, I was a jump rope champion in school. That's a better one.
Tell me about the man behind the Drag Queen?
He is exactly what you see during "Drag Race!" I'm still creative, and still have the same goals.
What's ahead for Bob?
I'm working on a standup comedy documentary called "Queen for the People." If you want to help the project you can go to my Instagram and click the link in the bio. I just came into some money, so I lowered my goal from $70,000 to $20,000.
