'RuPaul's Drag Race': Naysha Lopez
Scott Holland READ TIME: 3 MIN.
It feels like it's been years (in reality it was only nine months) since I last had my RuPaul fix, but last Monday ended that as the premiere of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 8 finally aired.
Who were all these personalities I was hearing about and seeing pictures of? Well, I finally got a glimpse of who they are, and I am excited to say that this season (after the snooze-fest last season) looks like it's going to be DRAGMAZING!
A photo challenge with the former winners (minus Bianca who wasn't available) was first up, and the main challenge was a legendary design challenge from previous seasons. The winner was Kim Chi and the bottom two were Naysha and Layla (although in my opinion Robbie should have gone home... no disrespect, just judging what I saw), and in the end Naysha sashayed away.
People always ask me at the beginning of the season who I think will win. My answer this season is that I have my eye on Bob The Drag Queen.
At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?
Drag was never an interest when I was young. I did this completely by accident at 18. After I did it I saw it as a way to express myself artistically and I became addicted.
I wanted to do pageants and I was sitting at home (at the time I was in Puerto Rico) with a friend and going through pageant program guides and I saw a queen named Naysha who looked a lot like I did. I looked up what Naysha meant and in India it means "special," and I knew it had to be my name. Lopez came from Jennifer Lopez, who is my goddess.
How many times did you apply to be on "RPDR," and how did it feel when you found out you were chosen?
I auditioned the first season, and then three times after that. After the fourth audition I got on. I was in my bedroom with some trade when I picked up the phone and it was the producer who proceeded to tell me the news and I was ridiculously ecstatic. After it sank in, I was super overwhelmed.
Is there an additional pressure now that RuPaul is in its eighth season and has aired 100 shows?
Absolutely there is a lot more pressure. Everybody is upset that I didn't sew, but I only found out two weeks before taping that I was on the show. In those two weeks you have to get all your world taken care of because you don't know how long you will be gone. In real life, I do drag as a career and I have seamstresses who make my outfits.
Tell me about your "RuPaul's Drag Race" experience.
It has been a surreal experience and I am a very positive person who has no regrets whatsoever. I learned so much from being on the show. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
Who do you want to win?
There are certain kinds of girls that "RuPaul's Drag Race" has. There are the ones who need the show and the ones who don't. Bob The Drag Queen is one who doesn't need the show. However, he works so hard and is such an amazing entertainer. I am definitely Team Bob.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
I am one of the most laid-back and chill people ever. I am a go-with-the-flow kind of shy person.
What's ahead for Naysha?
I am going to keep working and I can't wait to see what's to come.
