Trans Woman Killed After Being Repeatedly Run Over in Church Parking Lot
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Missouri police said a transgender woman died Monday from wounds she suffered from being run over multiple times in a Kansas City church parking lot early Saturday morning, local news station KCTV 5 reports.
Police are calling the death of Tamara Dominguez, 32, a possible hate crime but authorities say it's too early to label the apparent attack. For now, they are treating the case as an aggravated assault.
Witnesses say they saw a black Chevy Avalanche at the scene of the incident around 3 a.m. Saturday. According to police, the driver intentionally hit Dominguez and ran over her body two more times. According to Pink News, she was taken to the hospital and passed away Monday.
Members of Dominguez family said they're unsure with whom she would have been and do not recognize the SUV that allegedly ran her over.
"We understand that maybe they were arguing, but it's not fair for what he did. It ain't fair," Dominguez's friend Juan Rendon told KCTV 5. He added to KSBH TV, "Nobody has the right to kill someone."
"I don't think people have their mind open, they're just close-minded. They don't understand," he said. "For some people being transsexual or transgender or gay they think it's funny."
Rendon also created a GoFundMe page to pay so Dominguez's body can be sent to Mexico, where her family lives.
Dominguez's brother, Alberto Dominguez, also spoke about his sister to KCTV 5, which was translated from Spanish by Rendon.
"He just want to say to the person that did that to her, that he would forgive them for what he did to her, and he hopes that he can forget what he did," Alberto Dominguez said through translation. "We are not here to judge nobody, and he hopes that person really feels bad for what her did."
Dominguez's death comes after a recent report detailing the number of murders of trans women.
