Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Eleventh Season
Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The most emotionally raw, devastating and transformative experiences of most people's lives take place in a hospital: birth, death and such near misses that some people would call them miracles. This may be in part why "Grey's Anatomy" has been going strong for eleven seasons with no sign of letting up.
Each episode offers up another opportunity to look into a stranger's life and marvel at their unbelievable, yet somehow authentic, medical problem. On top of that, the series regulars deal with such tumultuous and vulnerable moments in their personal lives that audiences can't help coming back for more.
In Season Eleven the characters are faced with significant developments in their interpersonal relationships, causing big changes, drawing them even closer together and tearing them apart.
The ever-volatile Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) digs deep into her past to see if one of the newest members of the surgical wing at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), is really her half-sister, while Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) hesitates to tell Maggie that he's actually her biological father. As these insane family dynamics separate the team, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) works to draw everyone in "the family" back together.
Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) can't decide whether to have a child together or break up, so they go to marriage counseling, explore a trial separation and break the rules by hooking up when they are supposed to stay apart.
Fortunes rise for April Kepner (the compelling Sarah Drew) as she has the opportunity to have a child with Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), but things become tragically difficult for the two of them when they find the child has a rare birth defect.
In addition to all of this drama "Grey's Anatomy" still has some of the most amazing make-up effects on television. Never do you question if the blood and guts are anything other than real. A highlight of this season is a man who comes into surgery with a tree branch pierced right through his abdomen - and he's still alive.
Bonus features in this 6 DVD collection, featuring all 24 episodes, include an extended finale, a spotlight on the vibrant bad ass Caterina Scorsone (who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd), deleted scenes, bloopers and an interview with series creator Shonda Rhimes as she reflects on the loss of one of the series best loved characters.
