Superstar Miley Cyrus took to Twitter this weekend to respond to being called an anti-gay insult a number of times.

As British LGBT site Pink News reports, the "We Can't Stop" singer said she has no problem being called gay but takes offense when people negatively comment on her looks.

"I get called an ugly lesbian a lot more than one would think. Or maybe not. Can u atleast call me an interesting lesbian. I hate the U word," she tweeted.

The Huffington Post reports that Cyrus, 21, has responded to being called a lesbian in July.

"I'm not offended. You can call me much worse... Being a lesbian is a compliment more than what else they call me," the singer said.

Cyrus has been a strong supporter of the LGBT community. In 2011, she got a tattoo of the equal rights sing on her right ring finger and in 2012 she said London was her favorite place to perform because of the city's gay scene. Her song "My Heart Beats for Love" off her album "Can't Be Tamed" was inspired by one of her gay friends and was dedicated to her gay fans.

More recently Cyrus posted an Instagram selfie, wearing a pro-gay t-shirt, designed by out designer Marc Jacobs, Sugar Scape points out. The image shows a drawing of a same-sex couple with their child, with the caption "I pay my taxes I want my rights."
