Soccer Champ Comes Out, Marries Girlfriend

Soccer Olympic athlete Abby Wambach, who has not publicly come out before, announced that she has married her girlfriend, soccer player Sarah Huffman in Hawaii on Oct. 5, TMZ reports.

Wambach, 33, took to Twitter on Wednesday to thank her fans for their congratulations for her and her wife.

"Sarah and I wanted to thank everyone for all the love and support. We couldn't be happier. What an amazing week it's been. #honeymoon," she wrote.

Huffman also tweeted about the ceremony, which was held at the Villas at Po'ipu Kai, Hawaii where the couple exchanged vows on a beach at sunset with friends and family by their side, Gay Star News reports.

"By far best week of my life.Thank u for the support &well wishes.(Our boys were missed but dressed for the occasion)," she said.

Many speculated that the women were together after BuzzFeed reported their wedding registry was found at TheKnot.com. The Huffington Post also reports that Huffman tweeted a photo of her rainbow colored nail polish and of her huge diamond ring.

HuffPost reports that Wambach has never publicly come out, but Huffman announced she was gay when she teamed up with Athlete Ally, an LGBT rights group that aims to remove homophobia from sports.

"I am excited to be an ally and stand up for people like me in the LGBT community," Huffman said.
