21 Jump Street
Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Probably the biggest surprise of the year so far is how good and funny "21 Jump Street" really is. Even more of a surprise is what an effective and charming actor Channing Tatum has become. He started out as a handsome but lifeless lug, and then out of nowhere he is proving to be a real star. While "21 Jump Street" isn't really a direct remake of the popular 80's TV show, it is heavy on the nods including cameos from a few of the shows stars including Johnny Depp himself. But it's the chemistry between Jonah Hill and Tatum that is the real surprise, because they have it in spades. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the plot revolves around two frenemies from high-school who both join the police academy and end up partners as bike cops. After they screw up a drug arrest, they are forced to work undercover as high school students to find out who is dealing a new kind of drug. Chaos ensues as the two rediscover themselves and learn to succeed at their job. Along the way, the antics are so whacky, you will be in a state of non-stop giggles throughout. If you were thinking of skipping this one, don't. You'll have a blast!
Special features are numerous, if not all that fascinating:
30 minutes of Deleted Scenes - a few of which are amusing especially one involving Tatum's character high on drugs in a band room.
Gag Reel - it's smile-worthy, but not really funny.
Cube-O-Rama - a montage of Ice Cube's ribald comments.
Back to School - a short featurette on the film.
Brothers in Arms - A closer look at the Tatum/Hill duo.
Johnny Depp on Set - A quick featurette on Depp's cameo.
The Rob Riggle Show - a closer look at comedian Riggle and his work on the film.
Peter Pan on the Freeway - footage from the filming of a car chase scene
The film comes with an Ultraviolet Digital Copy.
