New Poll: Santorum Most Trusted with Gay Marriage

GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum is one of the most conservative candidates when it comes to social issues, such as LGBT rights, and a new Washington Post/ABC News poll says that the former senator of Pennsylvania is now the most trusted candidate with same-sex marriage, GoPride.com reported.

Thirty-one percent of the people polled said that they trust Santorum with social issues, such as gay marriage and abortion. Santorum beat out Mitt Romney who came in second place with 22 percent. Newt Gingrich came in third with 15 percent and Ron Paul placed last with 13 percent. Six percent of the people surveyed said they did not trust any candidate on social issues.

In December, a poll that asked the same question showed that Republican voters trusted Romney the most with gay marriage as he received 25 percent of the vote. Santorum placed dead last in that poll with just 4 percent. Gingrich came in second with 15 percent and Paul followed with 12 percent.

Santorum has been extremely vocal about his views on the LGBT community and same-sex marriage. He has said more than once that if he becomes the next president he will "unmarry" all same-sex couples and ban gay marriage.

"We can't have 50 different marriage laws in this country," the politician said. "You have to have one marriage law."

In January, Santorum was interviewed by CNN's Piers Morgan and told the reporter that he would ban gay marriage across the country.

"Marriage is an institution that existed before governments existed," he said. "It's something that reflects nature and reflects God and God's will for us. I think it's important to understand that you respect everyone and you respect their rights to be able to live their life in the way that they want to live it."

Although Romney does not support marriage equality, he will not attempt to nullify current same-sex marriages.
