Target Sells Shirts to Benefit Equality Advocates

Friday Jun 1, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Target Corp. is taking some heat for selling T-shirts to benefit a group that favors gay marriage.

The retail giant recently unveiled several "Pride"-themed shirts, with proceeds to benefit the Family Equality Council. The group is one of several fighting a proposed constitutional amendment in Minnesota to ban gay marriage.

Frank Schubert, a spokesman for one of the largest groups that favors the ban, tells Minnesota Public Radio ( ) the T-shirts are "a slap in the face to people of faith and supporters of marriage."

Target says the T-shirts simply reinforce its long support of the LGBT community.

The online T-shirt promotion marks an apparent turn for Target. The company was sharply criticized two years ago for donating $150,000 to support a candidate for governor who opposed same-sex marriage.

"The T-shirts are ’a slap in the face’ to people of faith" Oh, you mean "people of faith" like Charles [Cage the Queers] Worley or Pastor Jeff [Teach ’em Hate] Sangl? Good! They could use a good slap in the face.

I don’t see how offering a shirt limited to only online sales matters. Its a miniscule attempt on Targets part to appeal to lgbt people. I think id feel more impacted if they could place it in their stores. For it to ’slap’ anyone in the face you would have to deliberately go searching online for it.Target-you could do more if you truly wanted to support us.

These t-shirts are not, as pretended by Frank Schubert, a slap in the face either to people of faith or to supporters of marriage. The fact is there are many people of faith who support marriage equality. However, the t-shirts are a slap in the face who wish to push a limited view of faith and who wish to restrict marriage.

Better than nothing but to match the last donation to equal it out would seem more repentant but I guess we have to take the crumbs given for now.
